Laser Hair Reduction

Permanent hair reduction is defined by the FDA as a stable  decrease  in  the  number  of  terminal  hair (thick coarse) for  a  period  longer  than  the  complete  hair  cycle  at  a  given  area  following  a  treatment  regime,  which  may  include  multiple   sessions.

For the Indian skin type, Diode lasers are approved for permanent hair reduction.

Laser is an acronym derived from the phrase ‘’LIGHT AMPLIFICATION BY STIMULATED EMISSION OF RADIATION’’.

  • A laser equipped device can generate a high intensity light that is monochromatic, unidirectional, parallel and is used for Laser hair reduction, one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures across the world.

  • It beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles of the thick, coarse, dark hair.

  • Melanin Pigment in the hair follicles absorb the laser light energy.

  • The light energy gets converted to heat energy.

  • Heat energy warms up and destroys the hair follicle

BENEFITS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL

  • Coverage
Lasers are useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, chin, back, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas.

  • Precision
Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

  • Speed
The pulse of the laser takes fraction of a second and can treat many hair at the same time. The laser can treat an area which is approximately the size of a quarter, every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.

  • Predictability
Most patients have permanent hair reduction after an average of six to seven sessions if they do not have any medical issues.

FAQS

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR LASER HAIR REDUCTION?

Because the laser's light energy is absorbed by the pigment melanin in the skin, people with greater contrast respond best. So individuals with dark hair and light colored skin get maximum results. That's why you should avoid tanning before and after the treatment for best results. However new laser technology has made it possible for other people (including dark complexions) to get significant results.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Laser hair removal is good for both facial hair reduction and for body hair reduction.  Specific body sites include the upper lip, underarms, legs, back, shoulders, chin, cheeks, and other facial areas for women, etc.

HOW MUCH DOES LASER HAIR REDUCTION COST?

The cost varies depending on the area treated. The larger the area, the greater the cost. However your total investment in laser hair reduction ends up being significantly less than many other cosmetic alternatives. There is evidence, that laser treatment can have some very long lasting results, probably more than any other method.

DOES LASER HAIR REDUCTION HURT?

Not really. As compared to the pain from waxing or electrolysis most patients say their laser treatment was relatively pain-free. Many patients describe the treatment as tingling or a slight snapping sensation. Usually, the majority of patients can easily tolerate this sensation without any type of anesthetics. However you may elect to use a topical numbing cream before your procedure.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Most of the hair is permanently removed. Laser energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle and converted to heat, diffusing and injuring stem cells in bulb and bulge. Regrowth is finer and lighter than before.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Tanning should be avoided. Also you should leave slight stubble for laser hair removal to be effective. Therefore you should not shave the areas to be treated for about 3 days prior to your treatment. Also avoid waxing, tweezing, or bleaching those areas several weeks before laser treatment.

ARE LASERS SAFE?

  • The wavelength used for permanent hair reduction is within parts of the visible and the near infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is longer than dangerous X-ray wavelengths, yet shorter than microwaves which can overheat the tissue.

  • The technologies are designed to cause selective heating of lesions, but are safe for the surrounding tissues.

  • To prevent injury to the eyes, all laser and light systems come with wavelength specific safety eyewear.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Just before the procedure, your hair that will be undergoing treatment will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin surface. Usually topical numbing medicine is applied 20- 30 minutes before the laser procedure, to help with the sting of the laser pulses. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness, and location of your hair being treated as well as your skin color.
